In a surprising show of cross-party support, Patriotic Alliance MP Ashley Sauls has publicly backed ANC MP Soviet Lekganyane following his election as chairperson of the ad hoc committee tasked with investigating explosive allegations made by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The move comes amid heightened political tensions, with opposition figures raising concerns over the ANC’s leadership of the committee. Despite that, Sauls threw his weight behind Lekganyane, signalling a rare moment of unity in a highly politicised environment.
Lekganyane’s appointment has drawn both scrutiny and support, with the committee now under pressure to ensure transparency and impartiality as it delves into claims of political interference in SAPS operations raised by the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner.
As the inquiry gains momentum, Sauls’ endorsement could prove significant in shaping the tone and dynamics of the committee’s proceedings.
