Athlone police have launched an investigation into two separate shootings that resulted in the death of a man and left a woman injured in Vygieskraal, Cape Town. The incidents occurred on February 11 and are suspected to be linked to the ongoing gang violence in the area.
The first shooting took place late Tuesday night when police were conducting routine patrols. At around 11pm, they responded to a complaint on Johnson Road in Rylands, where they discovered the body of a man who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the victim was declared dead at the scene. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the death and stated that an investigation was underway.

The second shooting occurred in Petunia Street, Silvertown, where a woman was injured. Swartbooi confirmed that she had been shot and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. While the circumstances of both attacks remain unclear, law enforcement officials have classified the incidents as murder and attempted murder.
The suspects, described as “unknown,” fled the scene before authorities arrived and have yet to be apprehended. The police have urged the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying and locating those responsible. “We appeal to anyone with information to please come forward,” Swartbooi said, adding that the investigation is ongoing and the motive for the shootings is still being examined.
As authorities continue their efforts to uncover the truth behind these violent acts, they are hopeful that members of the community will provide crucial information that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects.
