A tragic incident unfolded at Durban’s Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in uMlazi, where a 39-year-old patient lost his life in a fire that broke out in his isolation cubicle. The patient, who had been admitted to the hospital on February 14, was undergoing treatment and had been placed in isolation due to his medical condition. The fire, which occurred on Tuesday, is believed to have been caused by the patient lighting a lighter near his oxygen mask, which was connected to the hospitalβs oxygen mainline. The combination of oxygen and the flame led to an uncontrollable blaze that quickly engulfed the single-bed cubicle.
Quick-thinking patients in nearby wards C5 and C6 noticed the fire and alerted staff, who rushed to the scene. Fire extinguishers were immediately used to contain the flames, while the hospitalβs sprinkler system activated, helping to mitigate the spread of the fire. The matron on duty was notified and assisted in managing the emergency. Despite the swift response from staff and the activation of safety systems, the patient, who had sustained severe burns, tragically succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath, the hospital took swift action to ensure the safety of other patients. Those in nearby wards were relocated to medical wards, and patients in isolation were given masks and isolated as necessary. To prevent any further health risks, all patients in close proximity to the affected ward were clinically examined for potential smoke inhalation. Fortunately, no other patients or staff members were injured during the incident.
The Department of Health has confirmed that police attended the scene and are currently investigating the cause of the fire. MEC Nomagugu Simelane expressed her condolences and reassured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure patient safety and prevent future incidents.
