In a devastating incident on Wednesday morning, a bus crash on the N6 has left 10 people confirmed dead, with more than 30 others injured. The crash occurred about 15 kilometers south of Reddersburg, en route to Smithfield, when a City to City bus carrying 33 passengers collided with a truck.
Sipho Towa, the District Manager for Free State EMS Control Center, reported that the collision caused significant casualties, with over 31 injuries and a death toll that may still rise as emergency services continue to assess the scene. “The priority is to extricate the last survivor,” Towa said, emphasizing the ongoing work of emergency and law enforcement teams.
In response to the tragedy, a full road closure has been implemented, with alternative routes set up for travelers. Those heading from Reddersburg are being redirected onto the R717 towards Edenburg, followed by the N1 to Springfontein and the R715 to Smithfield. The diversion adds up to a lengthy detour of over 100 kilometers.
Travelers coming from Smithfield should take the R715 to Springfontein, then proceed via the N1 to Bloemfontein, adding approximately 140 kilometers to their journey.
Emergency responders remain on the scene as they work to clear the wreckage and offer assistance to the survivors of this heart-wrenching crash.
