Accused in Ditebogo Phalane Murder Case Face Third Bail Delay Amid Public Outrage

The murder case that has gripped the nation saw another dramatic day in court as Elia Maeko, along with co-accused Ali Sithole and Nido Gumbe, returned to the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court today, May 6, 2025, for a third bail application.

The trio stands accused in the brutal killing of five-year-old Ditebogo Phalane, a case that has sparked widespread anger and calls for justice across South Africa. The bail hearing, initially postponed from April 9, has again been adjourned, prolonging the legal limbo surrounding the case.

The State continues to oppose bail, citing the gravity of the charges, ongoing public outrage, and risks to community safety should the accused be released. Prosecutors insist that allowing the suspects out on bail would undermine public trust and potentially endanger witnesses.

The court has now postponed the matter to August 27, 2025, to allow for further investigation and await a crucial decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how the case will proceed.

The delay adds to the emotional toll on Ditebogo’s grieving family and a public demanding accountability. As the legal process drags on, many are asking: Will justice be served swiftly, or is the system failing one of its youngest victims?
