Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has slammed the British government after being denied a visa to attend a conference in Cambridge, England, accusing the authorities of political suppression.

The visa refusal came just hours before Malema was set to depart from OR Tambo International Airport, leaving him “shocked” and “disappointed.” The rejection was issued without any clear explanation, despite prior assurances that the issue would be resolved in time for his travel.

“This decision is both unacceptable and spineless,” Malema said in a statement. “It is politically motivated and designed to suppress dissenting political voices that challenge the status quo.”

Malema was scheduled to attend a high-profile conference at Cambridge, which is known for its academic environment and diverse exchange of ideas. He had been invited to speak on topics of economic justice and African development, areas where he has been an outspoken advocate.

The EFF quickly condemned the UK’s actions, accusing British authorities of undermining academic freedom and engaging in broader efforts to silence political opposition. The party characterized the visa denial as part of a wider strategy to suppress voices critical of Western policies and influence.

“It’s a clear example of how powerful nations use their influence to suppress those who speak out for justice,” the EFF stated. “We will not be silenced.”

The rejection comes amid rising tensions between Malema and international governments, with the EFF often taking strong stances on issues of economic inequality, land reform, and decolonization.

While Malema has yet to make further comment on the matter, the controversy is already sparking debates about the intersection of politics, freedom of speech, and international relations.
