An unsettling incident unfolded at Northview High School in Johannesburg on Tuesday morning when the acting principal was shot multiple times in his office. The Gauteng Education Department confirmed the attack, revealing that the acting principal was struck six times by the assailants.
According to Provincial Education MEC Matome Chiloane, the suspects, who remain unidentified, entered the school premises under false pretenses. “It has come to our attention that two armed men posed as individuals bringing a quotation for tree felling and managed to gain access to the school,” Chiloane stated. “Once inside the acting principalβs office, they opened fire without warning, hitting him six times before fleeing the scene.”
The acting principal was swiftly rushed to a nearby medical facility and is currently in intensive care. Authorities have initiated a police investigation to track down the perpetrators responsible for this violent act.
In response to the traumatic event, the Gauteng Education Department has dispatched its psycho-social support unit to Northview High School to offer counselling for both learners and educators affected by the shooting. “We are deeply shocked by this brazen act of violence,” Chiloane expressed. “Not only was a school leader targeted, but the sanctity of our educational institutions has been undermined. We are committed to working closely with law enforcement to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”
Chiloane extended his thoughts and prayers to the acting principal, his family, and the entire school community, wishing him a swift and full recovery during this challenging time.
