Tensions are high at the University of Limpopo following the suspension of a male student over an alleged attempted rape involving a fellow female student on campus. The incident, described by the institution as βdeeply concerning,β has sparked renewed focus on gender-based violence (GBV) in academic spaces.
The suspension took effect on Monday, 4 August, as the university launched a formal investigation into the disturbing allegations. In a strong statement, the institution reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of GBV, emphasizing its commitment to the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of all students.
βAs a student-centred institution, the University prioritises the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of all its students,β the statement read.
In response, the university has activated support structures for the affected student, including psychosocial counselling and advocacy services through its Gender Desk.
While the investigation continues, disciplinary proceedings are expected to follow. The university has called for calm across campus and is actively engaging stakeholders to ensure due process is followed. Students affected by violence or abuse are urged to seek assistance as the institution continues its broader fight against GBV.
