Delay Granted to Allow New Advocate Time to Prepare Defense for Muzi Sibiya

The high-profile Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has been postponed once again, with proceedings now scheduled to resume on May 19, 2025.

The latest delay comes after Muzi Sibiya, the first accused in the case, was forced to find new legal representation following the death of his previous lawyer, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu. Advocate Charles Mnisi has since stepped in and requested more time to adequately prepare the defense.

A Trial Marked by Delays and Twists

The trial, which has captivated South Africa since it began, continues to face repeated postponements due to legal complications, changes in representation, and new developments. Meyiwa, the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, was fatally shot in 2014 under still-disputed circumstances.

Five men stand accused of orchestrating and executing the murder, but the road to justice has been long, winding, and fraught with controversy.

Public Frustration Grows

The frequent delays have drawn frustration from the public, with many expressing concern over how long the legal process has taken. Meyiwa’s family and supporters continue to call for accountability and closure.

What to Expect on May 19

Court is expected to reconvene with the defense team for Sibiya ready to proceed. Key witness testimonies, cross-examinations, and forensic evidence are anticipated as the trial moves into a critical phase.
