The case against Sekhukhune United player Shaun Mogaila, who faces charges of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving, and fleeing the scene of an accident, has been postponed to allow for further investigation.

Mogaila appeared at Thembisa Magistrate Court on Tuesday following his release on bail last year. The charges stem from a tragic accident in October 2024, when Mogaila’s black BMW collided with a red Hyundai i10 driven by Keo Mavimbela on Andrew Mapheto Drive in Tembisa. The crash resulted in the death of nine-year-old Gomolemo Mavimbela, while Keo and a 13-year-old boy were hospitalized with serious injuries.

During Tuesday’s court proceedings, Advocate Xolani Khumalo informed Magistrate Mmule Phatshwane that the state needed additional time to secure the post-mortem and J88 medical reports. Magistrate Phatshwane granted the request, postponing the case to May 19, 2025.

Following the crash, the City of Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) reported that suspected cocaine, edibles, and high-end Don Julio tequila bottles were allegedly found in Mogaila’s vehicle. Mogaila reportedly fled the scene but later surrendered to the police the same day.

In his first court appearance in November 2024, State prosecutor Maxwell Randima confirmed the charges against Mogaila and stated that the State did not oppose his bail application. Mogaila’s attorney, Octavius Magunda, disclosed that his client earns R40,000 monthly and could afford a R5,000 bail. However, Magistrate Hlengiwe Malevu set bail at R20,000 without additional conditions, citing the need for further investigation into video footage, post-mortem findings, and medical reports.

Keo Mavimbela and the 14-year-old neighbor’s son, who survived the crash, were discharged from the hospital in December 2024 and are currently recovering at home, relying on crutches.

Shaun Mogaila, who plays as a right back and right winger for Sekhukhune United, joined the Limpopo-based club from Royal AM during the recent transfer window. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 19, 2025, as the investigation continues.
