The CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, has been placed on precautionary suspension due to concerns over her appointment process. Social Development Minister Nokuzola Tolashe made this decision to allow for an investigation without any undue influence.

The issues surrounding Memela-Khambula’s appointment date back three years, with the Office of the Public Protector raising several red flags. Despite this, previous ministers failed to take action, prompting Minister Tolashe to step in.
SASSA spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi emphasized that the suspension is in the best interest of the millions of beneficiaries who rely on SASSA for social assistance. The investigation aims to ensure that Memela-Khambula’s appointment was procedural and compliant with regulations.

In the meantime, Themba Matlou, the regional executive manager in Gauteng, has taken over as acting CEO until the investigation is concluded ΒΉ. Memela-Khambula will receive full pay during her suspension.
