Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), has been placed on precautionary suspension pending an investigation into her appointment. The decision was announced by the National Minister of Social Development, Nokuzola Tolashe, on Tuesday. Minister Tolashe explained that the suspension was necessary to ensure that the investigation could proceed without interference, given Memela-Khambula’s senior role within the agency.

The suspension follows concerns raised by the Office of the Public Protector, which identified a range of serious issues that warranted further investigation. Tolashe emphasized that the decision was also taken to safeguard the dignity and integrity of the CEO. She praised Memela-Khambula for her humility in accepting the suspension.

In her statement, Minister Tolashe reaffirmed that all actions taken were in the best interests of SASSA and its millions of beneficiaries who rely on social assistance. She stressed the importance of ensuring that the agency operates transparently, efficiently, and effectively in order to address the challenges of hunger and poverty in South Africa.

Until the matter is resolved, Themba Matlou, the Regional Executive Manager for Gauteng, has been appointed as Acting CEO of SASSA. The investigation is expected to continue as the agency works to address the concerns raised and ensure that it continues to fulfill its mandate to the public.
