SANDF Troops Set to Return from DRC: First Group Arrives Friday Amid Peace Efforts

The first group of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops will return from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) this Friday as part of a structured withdrawal announced by Defence Minister Angie Motshekga. This marks a significant step in South Africa’s role in the ongoing peace efforts in the region.

A Moment of Reflection: Honouring the Sacrifices Made

Over 2,000 SANDF personnel have been deployed in the DRC as part of the MONUSCO (United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission) and SAMIDRC (South African Military Intervention in the Democratic Republic of Congo) missions. The soldiers have faced intense challenges, including engagement with M23 rebels and other armed groups, contributing to the volatile security situation in the region.

Earlier this year, the conflict claimed the lives of 14 SANDF soldiers, highlighting the personal sacrifices made by South African forces in their commitment to peacekeeping and regional stability.

Minister Motshekga and Military Veterans Lead the Welcoming Ceremony

The returning troops will be warmly welcomed at Air Force Base Bloemspruit by Minister Angie Motshekga alongside military veterans. The arrival of these soldiers marks a shift towards diplomatic solutions in the DRC, as South Africa and its African partners prioritize peace and stability in the region.

A Strategic Withdrawal and Continued Commitment to Peace

The structured withdrawal is part of broader African-led peace efforts to address the instability caused by years of conflict, especially in the eastern DRC, which has been a hotspot for violence. South Africa’s commitment to regional stability remains firm, with the withdrawal being seen as an essential step in supporting long-term peace processes.

While the SANDF troops return home, South Africa continues to support diplomatic dialogue and regional cooperation to ensure that the DRC and surrounding nations can achieve lasting peace. The sacrifices made by South African soldiers will not be forgotten, and their contributions to the mission will be honored as South Africa navigates its future role in fostering stability across the African continent.
