The South African National Aids Council (Sanac) has expressed concern over the proliferation of counterfeit condoms being sold at spaza shops across Gauteng. This comes after an investigation by IOL revealed glaring differences in condom packages, with the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) stating that its logo is being abused by producers of fake condoms.
Sanac spokesperson Nelson Dlamini emphasized the importance of using condoms from reputable shops, particularly in a country with a high prevalence of HIV. “The condom remains one of the most accessible, easiest to use, and most effective methods of preventing HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and unplanned pregnancies,” Dlamini said.
The investigation found that counterfeit condoms are being sold at spaza shops in various parts of Gauteng, including Sunnyside, Hillbrow, Atteridgeville, Tembisa, Mamelodi, Joburg CBD, Pretoria Central, and Soweto. The fake condoms are packaged differently from authentic ones, with noticeable discrepancies in labeling and sealing.
The SABS has distanced itself from fake condoms, stating that it does not regulate the importing of condoms into South Africa. The statutory body emphasized that authentic condoms must comply with specific labeling requirements, including type or texture, SABS certification mark, expiry date, batch number, and manufacturer’s details.
The Department of Health has also urged community members to use condoms from public healthcare facilities, which are available free of charge, or from reputable stores. The department warned that counterfeit condoms pose severe public health risks, including the failure to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies.
As the investigation continues, authorities are warning consumers to be vigilant when purchasing condoms, especially from spaza shops. With the high risk of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in South Africa, using authentic and reliable condoms is crucial for public health and safety.
