South Africa’s gospel powerhouse, Dr Rebecca Malope, has filed a lawsuit against multinational giant Procter & Gamble South Africa (P&G), seeking more than R1 million in damages over the alleged unauthorized use of her image on Ariel washing powder packaging.

Affectionately known as the β€œQueen of Gospel,” Malope served as a brand ambassador for Ariel from 2016 to 2022. However, she now claims that after the contract expired, P&G continued to use her likeness on their products β€” without renewing the agreement or providing any compensation.

β€œI tried to resolve this amicably, but they refused,” Malope revealed in a public statement. Her legal complaint, now filed in the Johannesburg High Court, accuses the company of breach of contract and violation of image rights.

In response, P&G issued a formal statement, saying: β€œWe are handling the matter through the proper legal channels and hold deep respect for Dr Malope’s contributions.”

As the legal battle looms, Malope remains determined. β€œI am doing this not just for me, but for all artists who have been taken advantage of. Our work and image matter.”

The outcome of this high-profile dispute could set a significant precedent in image rights and brand endorsement agreements in South Africa’s entertainment and marketing industries.
