South Africaβs gospel powerhouse, Dr Rebecca Malope, has filed a lawsuit against multinational giant Procter & Gamble South Africa (P&G), seeking more than R1 million in damages over the alleged unauthorized use of her image on Ariel washing powder packaging.
Affectionately known as the βQueen of Gospel,β Malope served as a brand ambassador for Ariel from 2016 to 2022. However, she now claims that after the contract expired, P&G continued to use her likeness on their products β without renewing the agreement or providing any compensation.
βI tried to resolve this amicably, but they refused,β Malope revealed in a public statement. Her legal complaint, now filed in the Johannesburg High Court, accuses the company of breach of contract and violation of image rights.
In response, P&G issued a formal statement, saying: βWe are handling the matter through the proper legal channels and hold deep respect for Dr Malopeβs contributions.β
As the legal battle looms, Malope remains determined. βI am doing this not just for me, but for all artists who have been taken advantage of. Our work and image matter.β
The outcome of this high-profile dispute could set a significant precedent in image rights and brand endorsement agreements in South Africaβs entertainment and marketing industries.
