In a groundbreaking move, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced a massive R941.5 billion allocation to transform South Africa’s public healthcare system over the next three years. This significant investment aims to provide equitable access to quality healthcare services, including free primary healthcare.

Key Highlights of the Allocation:

  • District Health Services: R132.1 billion will be dedicated to funding district health services, focusing on primary healthcare facilities, clinics, and community health centers.
  • Central Hospital Services: R58.3 billion will be allocated to central hospital services, ensuring that hospitals have the necessary resources to provide quality care.
  • Provincial Health Services: R49 billion will be dedicated to provincial health services, allowing provinces to tailor their healthcare services to meet local needs.
  • Other Health Services: R47.5 billion will be allocated to other health services, including facilities management and maintenance, to ensure that healthcare facilities are well-maintained and equipped.

The Department of Health will also focus on developing a patient information system, a centralized chronic medicine dispensing and distribution system, and a facility medicine stock surveillance system. These initiatives will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare system.

An additional R28.9 billion will be added to the health budget to retain 9,300 healthcare workers, employ 800 post-community service doctors, and ensure that pharmacies have sufficient medication.
