A chilling murder that shook a religious community to its core remains unsolved over a year laterβand now the South African Police Service (SAPS) is offering a R100,000 reward in a desperate appeal for information. The case involves the cold-blooded assassination of Father William Banda, a 38-year-old Malawian priest, who was shot dead inside the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Tzaneen on the morning of March 13, 2024, just before he was set to lead Mass.
The details of the killing are as disturbing as they are puzzling. A well-dressed man, believed to be the suspect, entered the church around 7:00 AM posing as a worshipper. According to witnesses, he participated in prayers and even sat beside Father Bandaβblending in so seamlessly that no one suspected the horror that would follow. Moments later, as the priest walked to the sacristy, the suspect followed and fatally shot him twice in the head before fleeing the scene in a white, unmarked vehicle.
Police have since released an identikit of the suspect, described as wearing black trousers, a brown shirt, and a waistcoat. Despite the ongoing efforts of the Limpopo Murder and Robbery Unit, the perpetrator remains at large. Authorities are now counting on the public to provide the breakthrough they desperately need.
Colonel Tinyiko Shilenge, who is actively involved in the investigation, made a heartfelt plea to the community: βWe need the publicβs help to bring justice for Father Banda. Someone knows something.β Investigators urge anyone with leads to contact Colonel Shilenge at 071 673 1814, Warrant Officer Shai at 082 465 2996, or anonymously via Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
With over a year gone and no arrests made, the reward may finally turn the tide in this haunting case. What began as a routine morning Mass ended in tragedyβand justice for Father Banda is still waiting.
