Chants of “Deport Omotoso now!” echoed outside the East London Magistrate’s Court today as protesters gathered to demand the immediate removal of controversial Nigerian televangelist Timothy Omotoso from South Africa.

The protests follow Omotoso’s weekend arrest by the Department of Home Affairs’ Immigration Inspectorate, which cited alleged violations of immigration laws. He is expected to appear in court today as legal proceedings continue around both his immigration status and other serious allegations previously leveled against him.

Demonstrators, many of whom are from women’s rights and civil society groups, expressed outrage that Omotoso is still in the country, citing not only the immigration issues but also the ongoing legal case involving multiple counts of rape, human trafficking, and sexual assault.

β€œSouth Africa cannot be a safe haven for abusers hiding behind religion. Deport him now!” one protester shouted.

The Home Affairs Department has not released detailed information on the grounds of Omotoso’s latest arrest, but officials confirmed that immigration enforcement measures are being pursued in conjunction with the ongoing criminal case.

Omotoso’s case has sparked nationwide debate over religious accountability, immigration oversight, and protection of vulnerable individuals, particularly young women recruited under the guise of faith and mentorship.

As the court proceedings unfold, tensions remain high outside the courthouse, with protesters vowing to return daily until decisive action is taken.
