Anele Kula Appears in Court for Alleged Murder of Girlfriend at Protea Glen Mall
Anele Kula, the man accused of brutally murdering his girlfriend, 22-year-old Sinenhlanhla Mathonsi, at a Pick n Pay store in Protea Glen Mall, made a brief appearance in the Protea North Magistrate Court this week.

Kula is facing a charge of premeditated murder after allegedly stabbing Mathonsi to death while she was on duty at the store on Sunday. The tragic incident has sparked outrage, especially as it unfolded in a public space during working hours, raising renewed concerns around gender-based violence in South Africa.

The suspect has abandoned his bail application and will remain in custody, pending further investigation. The court has postponed the case to 30 June 2025, allowing time for police to gather more evidence and finalise their case.
The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life, as calls grow louder for justice and stronger protections for women in the workplace and beyond.
