A South African private security company has offered to assist the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in their mission to combat militia groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and M23 rebels. The offer came after 13 SANDF soldiers were killed in an ambush while deployed on a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Goma. The security company, whose name is being kept private for security reasons, believes it could help push back the militia forces in the region.
The offer comes in the wake of reports that the SANDF troops had run out of ammunition during the deadly attack, which contributed to the tragic loss of life. However, Defence Minister Angie Motshekga dismissed suggestions that the SANDF lacked adequate resources, including food and ammunition, during the conflict. She emphasized that the military had not reported any shortages, despite circulating rumors suggesting otherwise.
The private security company has warned that the situation in Goma could escalate further if the South African government does not take a stronger stand in the region. The firm’s owner pointed to a potential lack of preparedness from the government and suggested that the fighting forces were undermining the country’s influence in the continent. This statement highlights growing concerns about the effectiveness of the SANDF’s involvement in the peacekeeping mission.
The tension between South Africa and Rwanda has intensified, with Rwandan President Paul Kagame criticizing President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African government for spreading misinformation about their talks. Kagame issued a stern warning, further complicating the diplomatic situation and adding to the already volatile climate in Goma. With both military and political tensions rising, the situation remains precarious.
