The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of two detectives in Roodepoort, describing the attack as a direct and devastating assault on law enforcement and public safety.
The two officers were ambushed on the morning of Friday, August 8, 2025, while transporting an awaiting trial prisoner from the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court to Boksburg Prison. According to police reports, the detectives were attacked in the Roodepoort CBD, disarmed, and fatally shot. One officer died on the scene, while the second succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
The suspect, identified as Zimbabwean national Jabulani Moyo, fled in the police vehicle, which was later recovered abandoned. He remains on the run, and the South African Police Service has offered a R150,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest.
Popcru has called the incident a tragic wake-up call and demanded an urgent review of prisoner transport procedures to better protect officers in the line of duty. The union emphasized that such brazen attacks not only endanger police but also erode public confidence in law and order.
Authorities are urging anyone with information on Moyo’s whereabouts to come forward, as the manhunt intensifies to bring him to justice.
