The police in Swartruggens are searching for three individuals who escaped from a holding cell on Sunday. Four detainees managed to break out after reportedly creating an opening in the roof of their cell. While one of the escapees, a 23-year-old man, was quickly apprehended as he tried to catch a lift along the N4 road, the other three remain at large. Authorities are continuing their efforts to locate and return them to custody.
The escapees include Mpho Vincent Madito (29), who was awaiting trial on charges related to multiple cases in Swartruggens and Makgobistad; Thapelo Mogwele Molebatsi (25), who faced theft charges; and Johannes Mfaladi (28), who was detained for an alleged assault. Police are working diligently to trace the remaining individuals and have called on the public to assist by providing any relevant information.
In another unrelated case, Constable Luthando Meintjies, 27, has been charged with multiple offenses, including serious allegations related to assault and unlawful conduct. The charges stem from an incident in November, where Meintjies was involved in a situation that resulted in the victim seeking assistance from family members. The case is ongoing, and a hearing for the next steps, including a bail application, has been scheduled.
Separately, a 63-year-old man in Welkom has been arrested in connection with allegations of inappropriate behavior. The arrest followed a report made by the victim’s relative, and the investigation is continuing. The accused is expected to appear in court next week for a formal bail application. Police are actively handling all these cases, and any information from the public is greatly appreciated.
