ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has come out strongly in response to the explosive allegations against Independent Development Trust (IDT) CEO Tebogo Malaka, calling for the law to take its full course—regardless of position or title.

This follows revelations that Malaka and her spokesperson allegedly attempted to bribe Daily Maverick journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh with R60,000 to suppress a corruption exposé. Myburgh claims the offer was made during a meeting he secretly recorded as part of his investigation into an R836 million tender scandal involving the IDT.

“It doesn’t matter who they are,” Mbalula said firmly. “If they are implicated in bribery or corruption, the law must deal with them.”

Rejecting any attempts to “intellectualise wrongdoing,” Mbalula stressed that accountability must be absolute and non-negotiable—a clear signal that the ruling party wants to be seen taking a tougher stance on corruption amid mounting public scrutiny.

As calls grow louder for Malaka’s suspension and a deeper investigation, all eyes are now on how law enforcement and oversight bodies will respond.
