The MK Party is set to appeal the Mpumalanga High Court’s decision to reinstate Mary Phadi as the province’s convener. Phadi had been dismissed in late November 2023 over allegations of financial misconduct and other serious charges. However, the court ruled that her dismissal violated the party’s constitution, prompting MK Party to challenge the ruling.
In their statement, the MK Party condemned the decision, claiming they were not served with the proper legal papers and had no chance to submit an opposing affidavit. The party confirmed that after legal consultations, they will appeal, believing that the court’s decision was based on misrepresented facts.
Phadi’s dismissal followed serious allegations, including misusing party funds, manipulating party lists, and being involved in an alleged assassination plot against General Tough Mdluli. Mdluli, a rival within the party, had also contested for the convener role and had raised concerns about threats to his life.

The MK Party reaffirmed its support for Busisiwe Mkhwebane, who was appointed as the convener of Mpumalanga after Phadi’s dismissal. The party insists that Mkhwebane remains the rightful leader in the province, with full confidence in her ability to carry out the party’s mandate.
As the party gears up to celebrate its first anniversary at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, the ongoing legal battle over leadership will be a key topic. MK Party continues to fight for what it believes is a fair and constitutional resolution to the dispute.
