Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie sparked criticism in the National Assembly after using his entire allocated speaking time to praise the Government of National Unity (GNU) and President Cyril Ramaphosa—without addressing the subject of the debate at hand.
Despite being reminded by the Speaker to stay on topic, McKenzie pressed on with his tribute to the newly formed GNU, lauding its potential and President Ramaphosa’s leadership. He left the podium without ever engaging with the actual motion being debated.
Opposition members expressed frustration, accusing McKenzie of grandstanding and undermining the purpose of parliamentary debate. Critics argue that his remarks, while politically aligned with the current administration, did little to contribute to the legislative discussion or provide accountability.
The moment added fuel to ongoing concerns about the functionality of the GNU, with some MPs calling for greater discipline and focus during Assembly proceedings.
