EFF leader Julius Malema didn’t hold back during the first sitting of the ad hoc committee probing Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations. He sharply rebuked Parliament’s legal advisor, Advocate Tetyana, after she suggested that Mkhwanazi’s claims did not amount to evidence.

Calling the remark “very dismissive,” Malema warned that such an attitude risks undermining the entire process from the start. “We didn’t come here to play, we came here ready,” he declared, stressing the seriousness with which the testimony must be treated.

Malema was clear: “You can’t say what he presented is not evidence… we’re starting on a wrong footing.” He also urged legal support staff to limit their role to technical advice, cautioning them against delving into political interpretations. “We’re not going to leave here being part of a remark that says what Mkhwanazi said is not evidence,” he insisted.

The fiery exchange set the tone for a committee charged with investigating allegations that could have far-reaching implications for police leadership and political accountability in South Africa.
