In a case that has gripped Durban, attorney Ravindra Maniklall confirmed to IOL that the appeal process for his client, 40-year-old Ferrel Govender, is officially underway. Govender, who was denied bail earlier this week, is seeking to overturn the Durban Magistrate’s Court ruling in the Durban High Court.

The bail application, described as a marathon session, ended with Magistrate Kevin Broughton determining that Govender failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances that would warrant his release. Despite the setback, Maniklall assured that legal avenues for appeal are firmly in motion.

Govender stands accused in a murder case that has sparked widespread attention due to its alleged motiveβ€”a deadly love triangle. The victim, 32-year-old Singh, was fatally shot in Umhlanga on December 29, 2024. According to the State, the killing stemmed from an affair Singh was allegedly having with Govender’s girlfriend.

While Govender remains behind bars, another key figure in the case, Darren, was granted bail set at R200,000 under strict conditions. Darren is required to report to a police station daily and must not interfere with any witnesses involved in the case.

The case is expected to return to court towards the end of May, with both the legal community and the public closely following the developments of this tangled and tragic affair.
