In a case that has gripped the nation, murder-accused pig farmer Zacharia Olivier is set to apply for bail today at the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court near Polokwane, Limpopo. Olivier stands accused alongside Rudolf De Wet and William Musora in a chilling murder investigation after the remains of Maria Makgato and Kudzai Ndlovu were discovered in a pigsty on Olivier’s farm in August.

Unlike his co-accused, De Wet and Musora, who have abandoned their bail applications, Olivier will proceed with his attempt to secure bail. His decision follows a pivotal appeal in the Polokwane High Court, which ruled against providing his defense team with a police statement made after his arrest.

The prosecution had previously contested the lower court’s decision to grant Olivier access to the statement, marking a significant procedural victory for the State.

The discovery of the victims’ remains in the pigsty has shocked the Limpopo community and beyond, drawing widespread attention to the brutality of the alleged crimes. The three accused face multiple charges, including murder, with prosecutors building what they describe as a robust case.

While today’s hearing focuses on Olivier’s bail application, all three accused are scheduled to return to court on February 18, 2024, for the main trial. The case continues to unfold, with legal experts and the public closely monitoring developments.

As the courtroom drama intensifies, this case underscores the severity of crimes that have left a lasting scar on the community and heightened demands for justice.
