Former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has expressed concerns that despite Eskom’s improved performance over the past eight months, the risk of load shedding still exists. Molefe, who is also an MK Party MP, made these remarks after Eskom management presented its improved performance to the energy and electricity portfolio committee.
Molefe’s concerns are rooted in the fact that Eskom’s energy availability factor (EAF) is currently at 63%. He believes that at this level, there is still a risk of load shedding. However, Eskom has assured that maintenance and the return of several units next year will further improve the system.

It’s worth noting that Eskom has made significant strides in improving its performance, with no load shedding occurring over the past eight months. The utility’s revenue has also improved due to the lack of load shedding. Despite this progress, Molefe’s concerns highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Eskom in ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply.
Eskom’s board chairperson, Dr. Mteto Nyati, remains optimistic about the utility’s prospects, stating that having no load shedding should be the norm. Nyati emphasized that Eskom is working towards making load shedding a rare occurrence, and the utility is confident that its efforts will yield positive results in the long run.
