Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi Issues Stark Ultimatum to Undocumented Migrants

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has sent a clear and firm message to undocumented foreign nationals living in South Africa: legalize your stay or leave. In a strong speech at the ANC Gauteng Lekgotla on May 3, Lesufi highlighted the growing strain that illegal immigration is placing on South Africa’s public services, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and housing.

Addressing the province’s worsening migrant situation, Lesufi pointed to Soshanguve, an informal settlement where more than 65% of residents are reportedly undocumented. He argued that unregulated migration is contributing to rising crime rates and pushing public infrastructure to its limits.

β€œOur ubuntu is being taken advantage of,” Lesufi stated, emphasizing that while South Africa’s generosity has historically welcomed migrants, it cannot continue to bear the burden of illegal immigration without facing serious consequences.

The Premier’s comments come amid growing concerns about the impact of undocumented migrants on national resources and social services, with Lesufi urging for comprehensive national policy reform on illegal immigration. He has raised the issue with President Cyril Ramaphosa, calling for a coordinated response to the problem.

Lesufi’s remarks have sparked a heated debate. Supporters of his stance have commended his call for tighter immigration controls, arguing that such measures are necessary to protect South Africa’s limited resources. Critics, on the other hand, warn that this rhetoric could incite xenophobia and stress the importance of ensuring that immigration policies respect human rights and offer fair treatment to migrants.

As Gauteng, South Africa’s economic heartland, faces mounting pressure, the nation watches closely. Lesufi’s comments have the potential to shape the direction of South Africa’s immigration policy for years to come, raising fundamental questions about the balance between national security, human dignity, and public resources.
