Janusz Waluś, the man who assassinated South African Communist Party (SACP) leader Chris Hani in 1993, has been deported to Poland after completing his prison sentence and serving parole. Waluś arrived in Poland on Saturday morning, following his deportation from South Africa on Friday. His return to his homeland marks the end of a lengthy and controversial chapter in South Africa’s post-apartheid justice system.

Waluś was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Hani, a tragic event that rocked South Africa and played a significant role in the country’s transition to democracy. After serving 28 years of his sentence, Waluś was granted parole in November 2022, a decision that sparked outrage among many, including the Hani family and political leaders who felt that justice had not been fully served.

His deportation to Poland, where he was born, comes after he met the requirements of his parole under South African law. Despite his release, the decision remains a point of contention, with critics questioning whether his actions have truly been accounted for. Many South Africans view the parole and deportation as a painful reminder of the country’s complex and often unresolved history.

The assassination of Chris Hani remains one of South Africa’s most traumatic events, and Waluś’s return to Poland does not erase the lasting impact of his crime. For the Hani family and many South Africans, the memory of Hani’s death continues to linger, leaving a bitter legacy that underscores the ongoing challenge of reconciling South Africa’s past with its future.
