South Africa is preparing to bid farewell to one of its most influential political figures, David Mabuza, with a series of heartfelt memorials and a state funeral that reflects his legacy. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has confirmed the official memorial and funeral arrangements, which span across Mpumalangaβ€”Mabuza’s political and personal heartland.

On Thursday, July 10, three separate memorial services will be held in the Nkangala, Gert Sibande, and Ehlanzeni districts, offering communities a chance to celebrate the former Deputy President’s life. The first service, set in his birthplace of Phola, will be attended by Deputy President Paul Mashatile, underscoring Mabuza’s enduring influence in the region.

The final farewell will take place on Saturday, July 12, at HoΓ«rskool Bergvlam in Mbombela. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver the official eulogy, marking the culmination of a week of national remembrance.

Mabuza’s funeral will be a Category 2 State Funeral, featuring full military ceremonial honors. The South African flag will fly at half-mast nationwide until his burial, in a sign of collective mourning and respect. The arrangements, made in consultation with the Mabuza family and the government, aim to capture both the personal and political weight of a man whose journey was closely tied to South Africa’s evolving democracy.
