Gauteng Rolls Out Smart License Plates to Fight Crime with Cutting-Edge Tech
In a decisive move to curb rising vehicle-related crimes in South Africa’s most populous province, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela today launched a new high-tech license plate system that could redefine road safety and law enforcement.
Unveiled at the Nasrec Expo Centre, the plates come equipped with scannable QR codes, tamper-evident decals, and advanced traceability features—a first for South Africa.
How the System Works
Each new license plate links directly to a cloud-based database that allows authorities to instantly verify a vehicle’s ownership, licensing status, and whether it has been reported stolen. The QR code feature makes real-time scanning possible for traffic officers, metro police, and security agencies.
“This is a game-changer for safety and security,” said Premier Lesufi during the launch. “We are using smart technology to disrupt criminal networks and protect our communities.”
Anti-Tamper Innovation
A standout feature of the new system is a “self-destructing” decal that adheres to SANS 1116 national security standards. The decal visibly distorts or tears when removed, making it nearly impossible for criminals to reuse or transfer plates—a common tactic in car theft, cloning, and kidnappings.
Additionally, every plate includes a manufacturer’s mark, ensuring full traceability through the production and distribution chain—another major step in preventing illegal duplication.
Pilot Program Underway
The rollout will begin with g-Fleet Management vehicles as part of a six-month pilot. If successful, the province will expand the initiative to all vehicles across Gauteng, marking the start of a more secure era in motor vehicle registration.
