The first week of the high-profile Joshlin Smith trial is nearing its conclusion, and explosive revelations have emerged in the courtroom, setting the stage for what promises to be a gripping next phase. On Friday, Sergeant Meyer Milstein, the initial investigating officer from the Vredeburg Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, is expected to continue with his evidence in chief. His testimony has already sent shockwaves through the trial.

Milstein revealed that he was just entering Morreesburg when he received a call about the missing child case in Saldanha. Without delay, he made his way to the scene, arriving at Middlepos around 1 pm on February 20, 2024. It was here that he first met Kelly Smith, the distraught mother of six-year-old Joshlin, who had been reported missing.

“I learned the mother’s name, Ms [Kelly] Smith, and I also learnt the child is Joshlin Smith, who was six years old at the time,” Milstein said.

The sergeant then described the first steps of the investigation. He conducted an initial interview with Kelly at her home and also met her boyfriend, Jacquen Appollis, before launching a search of the premises.

The search quickly uncovered disturbing evidence. Milstein stated that a biology dog led them to a pillowcase and a bedsheet, both of which showed stains that appeared to be blood. These items were collected by the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) and photographed for further analysis.

But the unsettling discoveries did not end there. Milstein also found a child-sized pink flip flop, which matched the clothing description provided by Kelly Smith.

“Upon further investigation, I also discovered a child-sized pink flip flop. It was relevant as it aligned with the clothing description of the child given by Ms Smith,” Milstein testified.

As the trial continues, the police sergeant’s testimony has raised many questions. The evidence gathered so far is chilling and hints at a more complex and sinister situation surrounding the disappearance of Joshlin Smith.

The courtroom now awaits cross-examination of Sergeant Milstein, which is expected to shed more light on the investigation and the critical pieces of evidence that could play a key role in this case. Stay tuned as this intense trial unfolds.
