South Africa — Tensions flared during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent visit to South Africa, as protesters gathered in major cities holding signs reading, “Give money to the poor, not war.”

While the official purpose of President Zelenskyy’s visit was to strengthen diplomatic ties and discuss global security cooperation, public reaction has been mixed. Demonstrations broke out, largely driven by concerns over South Africa’s domestic priorities amid rising poverty and economic inequality.

Some demonstrators expressed skepticism about the nature of the visit, speculating that it could be part of broader efforts to gain military or political support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. “We are not against peace,” one protester said, “but our country has urgent problems — people are hungry, and our communities are struggling.”

Though the South African government has maintained a neutral stance in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Zelenskyy’s arrival brought renewed debate over the country’s role on the global stage — and whether international diplomacy should take precedence over pressing local needs.

Officials have not confirmed any military agreements or aid commitments stemming from the visit. However, discussions reportedly focused on global food security, economic cooperation, and Ukraine’s push to build alliances across the Global South.

The protests reflect a broader sentiment among some South Africans who feel that foreign diplomatic efforts should not overshadow urgent socioeconomic challenges at home.
