Prominent broadcaster Aldrin Sampear has announced his departure from Newzroom Afrika, where he was a familiar face co-anchoring the AM Report. Sampear revealed live on air last week that he is taking a pause from journalism to join the Department of Tourism under Minister Patricia De Lille.

The award-winning journalist, also recognized for his acting role on The River, described the move as a purposeful step toward serving South Africa beyond the newsroom. His new role aligns with the government’s drive to rejuvenate tourism as a vital engine for the country’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

Sampear’s transition comes months after a suspension linked to a road rage incident, which he publicly apologised for. The news of his career shift sparked a wave of mixed but largely supportive reactions online, with many applauding his resilience and wishing him well in this exciting new chapter.
