Four South African nationals have been arrested in connection with the arson attack that gutted the Home Affairs office in Germiston, Gauteng. The suspects are expected to face charges related to the destruction of state property and public violence.
The fire broke out on 12 August 2025 during violent protests triggered by court-ordered evictions at Pharoe Park flats, where residents reportedly owe millions in unpaid rent. Amid the chaos, a petrol bomb was allegedly thrown at the nearby Home Affairs building, setting off a blaze that caused extensive damage to parts of the facility.
Authorities have confirmed that all four suspects are South African citizens and are being held in custody pending prosecution.
The attack has drawn condemnation from government officials, with calls for swift justice and increased security at vulnerable public service points. The Department of Home Affairs said operations in Germiston would be temporarily redirected while the damage is assessed and repairs are undertaken.
The incident has once again highlighted the volatility surrounding housing disputes in urban areas and the risks posed when protests spiral into violence and destruction of public infrastructure.
