Floyd Shivambu has clarified that he remains a member of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Partyβ€”despite his recent removal as secretary-generalβ€”but is actively exploring the possibility of launching a new political formation.

Speaking publicly, Shivambu revealed plans to consult widely with traditional leaders, religious figures, and prominent South Africans before making a final decision. The consultations, he said, are aimed at gauging the public’s appetite for a new political movement that could contest the 2026 local government elections and the 2029 national polls.

Shivambu’s balancing actβ€”maintaining ties to the MK Party while signaling the potential birth of a new political forceβ€”adds further intrigue to South Africa’s shifting political landscape. His next steps could determine whether he emerges as a splinter force or remains within the Zuma-led party fold.
