The Eswatini government has moved to calm growing concern in South Africa, firmly stating that five dangerous criminals recently deported from the United States will not be allowed to cross the border into South Africa.

The men—originally from Laos, Jamaica, Cuba, Vietnam, and Yemen—were sent to Eswatini last month after their home countries refused to accept them. All five have been convicted of serious crimes, including murder, child rape, robbery, and violent assault, triggering alarm in neighbouring South Africa over potential border security risks.

Eswatini authorities confirmed that the men are being held in secure isolation units at Sidwashini Maximum-Security Prison, located just 30 km from the South African border. Officials insist the group poses no immediate threat to public safety and are under strict surveillance.

To further address concerns, Eswatini has pledged to repatriate the individuals within 12 months through arrangements with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Despite these assurances, South African security experts have expressed concern over the porous nature of regional borders, warning that any breach could pose a serious risk to national security. In response, the South African Presidency summoned Eswatini’s High Commissioner to Pretoria for urgent clarification.

The South African government has since reinforced its commitment to heightened border vigilance, assuring the public that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent illegal entry and protect national security.
