As the death toll from the devastating Eastern Cape floods continues to climb, the provincial government has stepped forward with a solemn commitment to support grieving families by covering burial costs and offering logistical assistance.

In a statement issued this week, the Eastern Cape government confirmed that all families who lost loved ones in the floods β€” which have claimed nearly 100 lives β€” will receive the necessary financial and humanitarian support to ensure dignified burials.

β€œWe stand with every family in mourning. Government is working tirelessly to provide relief and to honour those who were lost with dignity,” said a provincial spokesperson.

The floods, triggered by torrential rains beginning around June 10, 2025, caused widespread destruction, displacing thousands and severely damaging infrastructure across the region β€” particularly in Mthatha, the hardest-hit area.

Alongside search and rescue efforts still underway, this burial assistance is part of a broader emergency response package, including food, shelter, and counselling services for the over 4,000 people displaced.

The province has also declared a day of mourning and continues to coordinate with national agencies and NGOs like Gift of the Givers to support affected communities.

As the waters slowly recede, the Eastern Cape’s promise brings a measure of comfort to families navigating grief, and signals a collective effort to rebuild both infrastructure and shattered lives.
