Police in Mpumalanga are investigating a deadly robbery incident that unfolded in the early hours of Sunday at Tonga View, where two alleged suspects were fatally shot.

Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane reported that the incident occurred around 2 a.m. when officers responded to a call about a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered a man with head injuries who recounted a terrifying encounter. He explained that while walking alone in Tonga View, he was ambushed by two men. One assailant restrained him from behind, while the other pointed a firearm at him, threatening his life.

Fearing for his safety, the victim fought back and managed to retrieve his licensed firearm. In the struggle that ensued, he fired at the two men, inflicting fatal gunshot wounds. Paramedics later arrived and declared the suspects deceased at the scene.

During their investigation, police recovered several spent cartridges, which were seized as evidence. A replica firearm, loaded with cartridges, was also discovered next to the bodies of the deceased. Authorities confirmed that the firearm in possession of the injured man was legally registered under his name. However, as part of protocol, his firearm was confiscated for ballistic testing, and he has been detained for further questioning.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, has mandated a thorough investigation to establish the full details of the event. Authorities are working to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal outcome, ensuring that all aspects of the case are scrutinized before any conclusions are drawn.
