In a bizarre incident, Mncedisi Mvumbi, a 46-year-old man, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail for attempting to rob a North West police station. Yes, you read that right – a police station!
Mvumbi, who was released on bail for allegedly killing a South African Police Service (SAPS) member, was rearrested by the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) for robbery in Bronkhorstspruit. It seems like Mvumbi had a penchant for trouble.
According to North West police spokesperson, Colonel AdΓ©le Myburgh, Mvumbi and his two friends entered the police station pretending to open a criminal case. But things took a drastic turn when Mvumbi asked to use the bathroom and then attempted to rob the police officers with an air gun.
Fortunately, the brave police officers fought back and overpowered Mvumbi, while his two friends ran off. Mvumbi was immediately arrested for attempted robbery and was not granted bail throughout the trial.
The Bafokeng Regional Court found Mvumbi guilty and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment for attempted robbery. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearm Control Act.
Provincial police commissioner in North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended the investigating officers for their diligence in ensuring that Mvumbi was put behind bars. Kwena also stated that the sentence would send a strong message that criminals across the province will face the full might of the law.
