The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mangaung is calling for immediate action from the municipality to repair severely deteriorated roads in Botshabelo, particularly those used daily by taxisβthe lifeblood of local public transport.

Following a recent oversight visit with the Botshabelo Taxi Association, DA representatives described the state of key routes as βcritical,β citing pothole-ridden roads that are becoming nearly impassable for public transport operators.

βThese potholes are wreaking havoc on vehicles, damaging tyres, suspensions, and axles,β the DA said in an official statement. βTaxi owners are shouldering high repair costs, threatening their ability to remain in business.β

The taxi industry plays a central role in moving thousands of Botshabelo residents every day, and the DA warned that the current road conditions are endangering not just livelihoods, but lives. Drivers navigating around gaping potholes are often forced into sudden swerves or hard braking, increasing the risk of accidents involving passengers and other motorists.
βThis is no longer just a transport issueβthis is a public safety and economic survival issue,β the DA stated.
Residents relying on private vehicles are also feeling the impact. Commuters travelling to work, school, and healthcare facilities are facing daily delays, vehicle damage, and increased transport costs.
The DA announced it will formally write to the Mangaung municipal manager, demanding immediate intervention and a long-term road maintenance plan for Botshabelo.
βProper road infrastructure is essential for economic stability, public safety, and community dignity. Ignoring these routes is not an option,β the party said.
