The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has intensified calls for the swift removal of Kenny Kunene from his role as MMC for Transport, following revelations that he was present at the Sandton residence of Katiso “KT” Molefe, a prime suspect in the murder of amapiano star DJ Sumbody.
Kunene confirmed his visit to Molefe’s home on the day of the suspect’s arrest, insisting he was facilitating an interview for a young journalist linked to his media company. However, the DA dismissed this explanation as “laughable” and “deeply concerning,” with party caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku stating that Kunene’s actions undermine the integrity of his office and tarnish the reputation of the city.
Despite mounting criticism, Kunene has maintained his innocence, emphasizing that his presence was strictly professional, denying any prior knowledge of the arrest, and accusing political actors of attempting to exploit the situation.
As public scrutiny intensifies, attention now turns to Mayor Dada Morero and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, which have yet to find any wrongdoing by Kunene.
