The Congress of Traditional Leaders of South Africa (CONTRALESA) has expressed shock and outrage over reports of extortionists targeting initiates for protection fees in Gugulethu, Cape Town, and Kariega in the Eastern Cape.

CONTRALESA secretary-general, Zolani Mkiva, described the acts as “diabolical” and “beyond imagination.” Mkiva emphasized that initiation is a sacred ritual and a rite of passage from boyhood to manhood and that demanding money from initiates or their parents is unacceptable.

Mkiva called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice, stating that they must be “thrown behind bars.” He emphasized that the police must take action to protect the initiates and their families from these criminals.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for increased protection for initiates and stricter laws against those who exploit and extort them. As the investigation continues, CONTRALESA and other traditional leaders are urging the authorities to take decisive action against those responsible.
