In a surprising yet welcome move, City Power has announced the indefinite suspension of load reduction, effective from Monday, 3 January. This decision comes after the utility company made significant strides in curbing illegal electricity connections and addressing widespread meter tampering.
According to City Power spokesperson Issac Mangena, these efforts have led to a noticeable decrease in the strain on the city’s power grid. βWeβve seen a marked reduction in pressure on our electricity infrastructure since intensifying our crackdown on illegal activities,β Mangena stated. This shift has not only stabilized the grid but also encouraged a wave of customers to come forward, seeking legal reconnections and committing to paying for the electricity they consume.
While this suspension marks a positive turn, Mangena cautioned residents against complacency. He emphasized that the indefinite nature of the suspension hinges on sustained responsible usage. βAny significant change in consumer behaviorβwhether itβs a surge in electricity consumption, renewed illegal connections, or meter tamperingβcould force us to reinstate load reduction measures,β Mangena warned.
The spokesperson further stressed that should the need arise to reintroduce load reduction, City Power may act swiftly and without prior notice to safeguard the stability of the electricity supply. βOur priority is to maintain a consistent and reliable power supply. But this is a shared responsibility, and we urge our customers to continue their cooperation,β he added.
For now, residents can breathe a sigh of relief, but the message is clear: the future of uninterrupted electricity lies in the hands of the community.
