The shootout unfolded on Che Guevara Road in Berea, where police confronted the suspects. One of the men was fatally shot on the scene, succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds, while his accomplice was rushed to the hospital. By Wednesday morning, the condition of the hospitalized suspect remained unknown. Police spokesperson Robert Nethsuinda confirmed that no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.
Further investigations revealed that the two suspects were positively linked to five murders in the province. The first incident, a triple homicide, occurred in January in the Ntambanana policing precinct, while a double murder took place in the same area in June 2024.
Following the cash-in-transit heist, the suspects fled through Chatsworth, where they opened fire on a taxi, tragically killing a woman inside. Another woman walking along the road was also shot and wounded in the crossfire. Nethsuinda explained that police tracked the suspects’ movements through their vehicles, which eventually led them to Berea.
One of the vehicles used in the robbery, hijacked earlier in KwaMakhutha, was later discovered abandoned in Mariannhill. Inside the vehicle, police found what appeared to be money bags, further tying the suspects to the heist.
Dramatic footage of the cash van being blown up on the N2 has since gone viral on social media, capturing the attention of the public and highlighting the brazen nature of the crime.
