A bold prison break came to an abrupt end when 29-year-old Matome Reuben Modiba was re-arrested at his homestead in Tickyline Village on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Modiba had escaped from police custody just days earlier, slipping out of the Maake Police Station holding cells on Monday afternoon, June 30, around 13h30.
Originally detained on charges of burglary, Modiba now faces an additional charge of escaping lawful custody. His short-lived freedom triggered a manhunt by local authorities, who tracked him down to his home in Limpopo, where he was swiftly apprehended.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the escape, with internal procedures under scrutiny. Modiba is expected to appear before the Ritavi Magistrateβs Court on Friday, July 4.
Officials have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as part of efforts to tighten security and prevent further incidents of this nature.
