Alan Gooderson, the visionary founder of Gooderson Leisure Group, has passed away at the age of 87. A statement from the company expressed deep sorrow at his passing, describing him as a pillar of the Gooderson Leisure family and a trailblazer in the hospitality and timeshare industry.
Goodersonβs remarkable journey in hospitality began in 1958 when he moved from England to join his family in South Africa. His entrepreneurial spirit and dedication led him to take over Gooderson Leisure Group in 1979, a move that would shape the company into what it is today. Under his leadership, the company made groundbreaking strides, particularly in pioneering timeshare developments in the Drakensberg. His contributions helped grow and transform Gooderson’s hotels and resorts, leaving a lasting legacy in every facet of the business.

Beyond his work with Gooderson Leisure, Alan Gooderson played a significant role in the broader hospitality sector. He served as the Chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal branch of the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (FEDHASA), where he was a staunch advocate for the industry. His leadership and contributions were recognized when he was honored with the prestigious title of Hotelier of the Year in the early 2000s.
A family man at heart, Gooderson is survived by his daughters, Cheryl and Colleen, and is reunited with his late son, Daniel, and his wife, Judith. His family and colleagues remember him for his kindness, vision, and unwavering determination. Alan Gooderson’s legacy will continue to impact the hospitality industry, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
