In a major crackdown on illegal mining activities, 33 individuals, including five women, were arrested during Operation Vala Umgodi in Pilgrim’s Rest, Mpumalanga. The suspects, aged between 18 and 45, were apprehended for their involvement in illegal mining and were found in possession of various mining equipment.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli confirmed that law enforcement agencies confiscated numerous items during the operation, including 11 phendukas (mining carts), four generators, seven gas cylinders, a 1000-litre water tank, two motors, cutting torches, water pumps, spades, shovels, electrical cables, a jackhammer, and even a pilot gun. These items are believed to be linked to illegal mining activities in the area.

The suspects made their first appearance at the Graskop Magistrate’s Court on Monday, but the case has been postponed to March 7, 10, and 13, 2025, for further investigation and age verification. The postponement also aims to avoid overcrowding in court.

Meanwhile, the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL) has cracked down on employers who hire illegal foreign nationals without valid work permits. Minister Nomakhosazana Meth revealed that 38 employers were fined a total of R68,000 during a recent blitz inspection. The DEL works in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs and police to enforce both immigration and labour laws, ensuring the protection of workers and proper documentation for foreign nationals.

As the investigation into illegal mining and employment practices continues, authorities are determined to hold those responsible accountable and curb illegal activities in the area.
